From a pretty background for your wedding day perfume, to somewhere to place your wedding rings for a beautiful photo, to the all important wedding bouquet, flowers are one of the most important aspects of your wedding day (in our humble opinion!).

There are so many ways to use flowers or foliage throughout your wedding day. Florals can make a room come to life, or create stunning centre pieces for your wedding reception, or even adorn your hair as a flower crown.

We have had the pleasure of working with some of the best wedding florists in Somerset and beyond over the last year or two. Here we got some expert advice on all things wedding flowers from the the very lovely Suzy, owner of Blooming Divine.

What do brides need to know before meeting a wedding florist?

“First of all, the wedding date! Don't bother booking any supplier until you have that all important date! Colour scheme and style, I love to hear all about your plans for your day, the more detail the better!

And finally budget, a tricky topic but super important when designing your florals. Have a rough idea of how much you would like to spend and communicate that to your florist, we can then quote effectively using the budget you have and let you know if the ideas you have in mind are feasible.

There's always a way round things and I always recommend reusing designs throughout the day, for instance, moving your ceremony arrangement to the top table or your pew ends to your top table chairs.”

What's your advice for brides-to-be on choosing which flowers are best for their wedding day?

“Trust your florist. A good florist knows exactly which flowers are in season or which variety of Rose matches your Bridesmaid's dresses and can pull all this together to create beautiful designs for your day.

On a sidenote, ask your florist lots of questions, don't be afraid to ask for examples of their work, find out if they've worked at your venue before and if not will they meet you there for a site visit?

And remember, a cheap quote isn't always the best quote. You're paying for the florist's experience and expertise, you can then relax knowing you're in safe hands!”

How far in advance should couples order the flowers?

“I would say as soon as you've booked your venue, the florist should be one of the first people you contact. I tend to book about 12-18 months in advance, especially if it's a big job with lots of venue decorations.

I do however have Brides contacting me with just a few months to go who haven't thought about flowers! I always try to fit them in, but if I can't, I can give them details of other florists who could help.”

Do you offer specific packages or is everything customised?

“I offer a bespoke service as no two weddings are the same. Normally this involves an initial phone call to discuss your ideas. I like to get to know my Brides (and Grooms!) so I can really understand what they like and dislike.

Running alongside this, I have just launched 'Simple Weddings' an email only consult package for those requiring just bouquets and buttonholes and a few venue flowers. The aim is to cut down on my admin time, offering a simple, no fuss ordering system and by doing so, reducing the cost to my clients. On average couples can save 10% on my usual bespoke prices by opting for a 'Simple Wedding'“

What is your distinctive style?

“I like things a little on the wild side with plenty of foliage for texture and visual interest. I've been told you can spot one of my bouquets a mile off, so I suppose my style must be quite distinctive!

The bouquet I designed for Danielle last year, photographed by you guys so beautifully has almost broken the internet! Everyone wants it!”

Where do you get your inspiration from?

“The great outdoors! I'm a country girl at heart and love going for a stomp around our beautiful countryside. I'm a big fan of foliage so put me in a wood and I'm in florist heaven!

I love to take inspiration from the seasons and Autumn is my all time favourite. I must admit to letting out an excited squeal when a Bride says she wants an autumnal bouquet!”

Thank you so much Suzy for your tips and advice. If you are looking for a wedding florist in Somerset who pays attention to the smallest detail and makes THE prettiest bouquets, click here to see more of Suzy’s beautiful work.
