5 things you must do on your wedding day

Wedding day advice

When planning your wedding day, there is a never ending list of wedding to-dos! Of course you have to make sure you have all the big stuff ready like the correct paperwork and the registrars booked etc, but don’t over-look the smaller details! After photographing weddings for over 8 years we have picked up on the little things that can get overlooked or forgotten about on the wedding day, and as always, we’re here to help. So here are five things you must do on your wedding day.

1. Make sure to wear nice dressing gowns when you are getting ready. You don’t have to buy expensive ones if you don’t want to, but getting matching dressing gowns for you and your girls makes a huge difference in the bridal prep photos. You don’t want to be wearing an old, grubby vest top whilst your having your hair and make up done. You can get some really reasonably priced dressing gowns on places like Etsy, you can get them monogrammed and personalised dressing gowns if you wish. You can even get one for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom if they will be getting ready with you.

2. Bring a nice hanger for your wedding dress. It breaks our heart when we see a beautiful wedding gown hanging up on a cheap plastic hanger. It doesn’t photograph well and your beautiful wedding dress deserves more than that! We advise to invest in a white, wooden hanger to hang your dress on. It doesn’t have to be personalised, that’s completely up to you! And consider buying a few extra for the bridesmaids dresses too.

3. Bring the confetti! So many couples assume that their guests will bring along the confetti, and yes, the odd guest may bring a packet or two, but for the majority of weddings the couple provide the confetti. Of course you need to check that your venue allows confetti before you order, most venues will ask for biodegradable confetti petals and there are some great companies to buy from like Shropshire Petals. If you are not allowed confetti, consider using an alternative such as bubbles which make for a really fun photo!

4. Display your cake well. We say this far too many times than we would like to admit, but it really does break our hearts to see a stunning wedding cake, that you have probably spent a lot of money on, sitting in a dark dingy corner of your reception room. In the past, we have been known to ask the bride and groom if they would like to move the wedding cake for the cake cutting, luckily for us they usually trust us so are happy to move it. A bit risky, but so worth it! Save us the trouble and speak to your venue ahead of the big day to find out where your cake will be set up. Use foliage or a cake hoop to add that extra wow factor!

5. Spend time together on the day. This is a really easy one to over-look, we hear so many couples say they wish they would have spent more time alone on their wedding day. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day, chatting to all your wedding guests and never taking a moment for just the two of you. We always try and remind our JK couples to have a moment alone, this is usually straight after their couple portraits, we leave them to have some time alone to take it all in and really connect to eacth other without any distractions.
