What to do if it rains on your wedding day - Somerset Wedding Photographer

It's ironic to have rain on your wedding day, well, that's what Alanis Morissette tells us anyway (altogether now, 'It's like raaaaaaaain, on your wedding day!). But is it really ironic here in the UK considering the good old British weather?

We all dream of perfect weather for our wedding day, not too windy, not too hot or cold, and certainly no rain thanks very much!! But if there's one thing you can never predict or control, no matter how much you try, it’s the weather. And although a little rain is considered lucky on your wedding day, none of us want a complete downpour for the duration of your wedding day. So, as we always say here at James and Kerrie Photography, hope for the best but plan for the worst, because with a little planning and preparation, the rain needn't dampen your day one little bit (no pun intended!).

Just like the boy Scouts famous motto, be prepared!

Ask your bridesmaids to bring umbrellas (white or clear are best, but you can opt for a rainbow of colours too!), and wet wipes to clean your shoes. You can buy a pair of good old wellies and have some fun with photos in the rain!

Photos may take a little longer on a rainy day.

Walking around in a wedding dress or walking across a wet field will need a little extra time & planning, and of course your photographer will need to prepare their equipment ahead of time to protect it in the rain. Umbrellas will need to be handed out or rain coats put on. Usually, it won't rain the whole day so you may need to adjust your timings for photos during the day to maximise the use of any dry spells.

You may need to have photos inside.

Speak to your venue way ahead of time to ask what the wet weather option for photos are in case the rain doesn’t let up all day. Lots of wedding venues have beautiful staircases or hallways you can use, or a beautiful window can be great for some stunning bridal portraits.

Grooms, bring a spare pair of shoes if possible.

Or at least a dry pair of socks to change in to so you don’t have to do your first dance in soggy foot wear. You don’t want to be squelching across that dance floor!

Try not to check the weather too many times in the lead up to your big day.

The weather can change drastically over the course of a week or 2, check it one final time 48 hours before and that should hopefully give you a good indication of what to expect on your wedding day.

We can’t emphasise this one enough, please don’t panic!!

Trust in your wedding photographers, they will have worked in all different weather conditions before so will know what to do to get the best photos for you. Let them and your wedding co ordinator guide you though the day, all you need to do is relax and trust in the professionals.

And remember, sometimes the rain brings rainbows or dramatic skies, so it could actually work in your favour! Whatever the weather throws at you on your wedding day, it's still your wedding day, as long as you are prepared you WILL have the most amazing day ever, come rain or shine.
